Rev. Michael Shane Hickey

From the moment he felt the call, this pastor's journey has been a testament to God’s divine plan. A chance encounter with the President of Phillips Theological Seminary confirmed what had been stirring in his heart for years—his love for serving others was meant to take root in ministry. Without hesitation, he answered the call, stepping into seminary just months later and embracing the sacred journey that led to his ordination in 2001. Guided by Matthew 25:31-46, he sees Christ in every person he serves, cherishing each opportunity to extend love, compassion, and the presence of God to those in need.

Balancing faith and hard work, he spent 38 years at Baker Hughes while also shepherding his church family, never wavering in his commitment to both callings. His love for his congregation is deep and unwavering; they are not just people in pews, but family—supportive, welcoming, and filled with a spirit of service that reaches beyond church walls. Every baptism, every wedding, every sermon, and every shared moment at the communion table is a reminder of God’s grace and mercy.

Beyond the pulpit, he finds joy in the simple yet meaningful moments of life. He is a devoted husband to Susan, a loving father to Jeremy and Justin, and a proud grandfather of four. Family is at the heart of who Pastor Shane is. He treasures time spent with loved ones, traveling, and getting lost in the pages of a good book—especially romance novels, despite joking that it costs him his "man card." A Hallmark movie enthusiast, he embraces the beauty of love and faith in life and fiction.

Every day, he wakes up with gratitude, knowing that ministry is not just a job—it is a gift, one he does not take for granted. With an open heart and an open door, he continues to walk in faith, serving with love and gratitude, knowing that in every act of kindness, he is reflecting the presence of Christ.

History

Begins with a Revival

The history of First Christian Church in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, began with a powerful revival led by Brother Morton Wood in November of 1903, held in the Corbutt building. For the next two years, the congregation gathered for weekly Sunday services in members' homes. Throughout this time, several influential preachers, including Elder Parker, Dr. McDonald, and Elder Starling, held revivals to nurture the growing community. In addition to these gatherings, a Ladies Aid Society was formed, meeting monthly in members’ homes to provide support and fellowship.

51 Charter Members

First Christian Church of Broken Arrow was officially organized by Elder S.B. Hawkins in March 1905, with 51 charter members. Elder Hawkins, who served as the Oklahoma Corresponding Secretary and Organizer of Missions for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), helped lead the congregation. Early services were held at the local schoolhouse alongside three other churches: Presbyterian, Methodist, and Baptist. The church secured an $800 loan from a bank in Winchester, Kansas, to purchase a lot at the corner of Main and College. The loan was fully paid off by May 1908, thanks to the efforts of the Ladies Aid Society, who raised funds through events like ice cream suppers and Tom Thumb Weddings.

1911 - Church is Incorporated

The church was incorporated on January 4, 1911. They had a board and six committees: advertising, music, entertainment, ushers, arrangements, and finances. The new building cost approximately $3,500. The church members pledged $1,000. They borrowed $1,200 from the Board of Church Extension and the remainder was received from the community of Broken Arrow and The Ladies Aid Society. A long and very successful revival was held to consecrate the new church building. J.H. Bickwell was the evangelist. He had both a children’s choir and an adult choir.

He preached a sermon for the children and then they were sent to another part of the church building for the remainder of the service. Brother Bickwell used charts and illustrations in his regular sermons.

1967 - 1992

The new building was completed in the summer of 1967. The minister during this time Charles Griffith resigned in December of 1969. The church then hired Bill McGuire to be their interim minister in January of 1970. It was during this time a second unit of the Master plan, a Fellowship Hall, was completed in the fall of 1977.

After 13 years of ministry Bill McGuire preached his last sermon on Easter Sunday 1983 and then retired. The church called Dr. Rev. Marvin Layman to be their minister in January 1983 and began his ministry on April 4, 1983. Dr. Rev. Marvin Layman retired in 1992.

December 12, 2021 - Tragic Day

December 12, 2021, marked a heartbreaking day for the First Christian family with the sudden passing of Rev. Glenn Davis. His death came as a shock to all, and it took several months for the church to begin healing. However, thanks to the dedication of the church's leaders and congregation, they were able to move forward despite their profound grief.

In February 2022, the Search Committee reached out to Shane Hickey with an opportunity for a merger between First Christian and Fellowship. This merger would reunite the two congregations, which had originally split in 1966.

2022 - Another Merger
In March 2022, both churches voted to merge. There would be two more congregations that would be a part of the merger, Disciples Owasso and New Life Fellowship (an Ethiopian Congregation). Both congregations were now worshipping at Fellowship Christian.

Fellowship would sale their church to the Broken Arrow School District. First Christian and Fellowship worship as one church family for the first time on Easter Sunday April 17, 2022.
